Gamila made her debut as a choreographer at New York’s
prestigious Ethical Culture Society June 1992 with a
fantastic lineup of guest artists as well as a splendid
array of her own choreographies performed by her dance
company. She continued to build her repertoire and
produce independent shows.

By 1994 her work caught the interest of Dr. Mohamed
El Saadany, then Vice President of the Egyptian American
Folkloric Society. Since then Gamila El Masri has been
Manhattan’s best kept secret.
Unless you were one of the twenty some odd dancers who
had been in her dance company between 1994 and 1998,
you wouldn’t be familiar with her work.
Once she began working with the Egyptian American
Cultural Association’s Folkloric Group all of her works
were presented among the Egyptian American cultural
community at closed events.
As principal choreographer she was called upon to design
the dances required to represent specific areas of Egyptian
culture along the Nile from Nubia to Alexandria.
She has done this to great acclaim.

Early in 2000 Gamila sustained an injury which plagued her until she had to succumb to inactivity while the injury healed. She began teaching again in April of 2002 and formed her current dance company, NileSide a few years later.
